Bagan, Myanmar
This week’s photo comes from Bagan, Myanmar. Formerly known as Burma, Myanmar has been in the news in recent months for various controversies and humanitarian crises. While it is important to recognize the events taking place across this country, The Hangry Backpacker will leave the political commentary for others.
Bagan is the epicenter of Buddhist temples in the world. Seriously, there are more than three thousand temples concentrated in this small area, some of which have been around for more than a millennium.
There are many reasons to visit the temples of Bagan. For less than $20(US), you have nearly unlimited access for five days. Best of all, Myanmar is an emerging tourist destination. Even as the top tourist destination in the country, you will find yourself alone at most of the sites.
Be aware of when you go. Summer boasts even fewer tourists, but it will be dreadfully hot and dry as a desert. Summer is followed by the rainy season, where the area receives a mind-blowing amount of rain – so bring your ark. Consider the weather carefully, and you will make the best of your journey to see the temples of Bagan!
