Kampot, Cambodia

This week’s photo comes from Kampot, Cambodia. In the picture here is one of the world’s most notorious fruits, the durian. The durian fruit is widely popular across Asia, especially Southeast Asia where you see it for sale on streets across the region. The fruit is known for its foul odor, which, for many, is unbearable. If you can get past that less-than-pleasant stink, you will find a unique fruit and you may even become a fan yourself!

While there are no signs around noting the distinction of size of this durian, my large person here for comparison shows clearly it has got to be one of the largest in the world. You will certainly see more durian on the streets of Thailand, but Kampot is home to the big one as well as a fantastically chill vibe!

Bagan, Myanmar

temples of bagan myanmar

This week’s photo comes from Bagan, Myanmar. Formerly known as Burma, Myanmar has been in the news in recent months for various controversies and humanitarian crises. While it is important to recognize the events taking place across this country, The Hangry Backpacker will leave the political commentary for others.

Bagan is the epicenter of Buddhist temples in the world. Seriously, there are more than three thousand temples concentrated in this small area, some of which have been around for more than a millennium.

There are many reasons to visit the temples of Bagan. For less than $20(US), you have nearly unlimited access for five days. Best of all, Myanmar is an emerging tourist destination. Even as the top tourist destination in the country, you will find yourself alone at most of the sites.

Be aware of when you go. Summer boasts even fewer tourists, but it will be dreadfully hot and dry as a desert. Summer is followed by the rainy season, where the area receives a mind-blowing amount of rain – so bring your ark. Consider the weather carefully, and you will make the best of your journey to see the temples of Bagan!

The Magnolia State! I've always thought Magnolia The Magnolia State!

I've always thought Magnolias are cool flowers, all the way back to 3rd grade when I brought one from my grandparents house to show the class. Nyctinasty (plant circadian rhythm!) - fascinsting how they respond to light, opening in the day and closing at night. Not sure the other 8-9 year olds were impressed 😆
