Escaping Athens: 48 Hours in Bulgaria

November 25, 2018 By Hangry Backpacker Leave a Comment

There I sat. In Athens. Watching the sunset atop a hill, surrounded by cool November air. To the west, the Sun was falling down to the sea. A few hundred meters behind my back was a small site of ancient ruins. Not a single other person in sight. Less than a mile beyond this was the Acropolis, in all of its photogenic glory, soaking up the last few minutes of the day’s warmth. Above and beyond, blue skies and light were coming through the clouds.

So here I am, enjoying a stunning sunset in one of the most historic cities on Earth. I couldn’t have asked for a better scene. This seems like the perfect place to take it all in, right? Can it get any better? Yes, it can. It could start by just being good. Hell, I would have settled for half-decent at this point. [Read more…] about Escaping Athens: 48 Hours in Bulgaria

Travel in Yerevan, Armenia

November 8, 2018 By Hangry Backpacker Leave a Comment

Yerevan is not on most travel radars, and Armenia is often out of the question. That mentality needs to change. Yerevan is a beautiful city and Armenia is a great destination for tourists seeking to travel somewhere unique.

Eating Portland: Two Brothers Rakia Bar & Grill

November 2, 2018 By Hangry Backpacker Leave a Comment

Portland, Oregon is home to countless restaurants serving up a tremendous variety of ethnic foods. The excessively progressive city has become known and respected for some of these eateries, with most foodies flocking to the hottest dim sum joint or a reliably delicious noodle house. Fusion fare is especially popular, combining old, new, near and foreign. The result is good, but expensive food.

With a sizable Asian population and influence, many of these restaurants are, in fact, tremendously authentic and delicious. But away from the Asian scene and far from the super-vegan, certified-safe-space cuisine are plenty of options for filling up on something unique and delicious.

Prague, Escape from the Tourists

October 30, 2018 By Hangry Backpacker Leave a Comment

Prague is full of tourists. Over the last several years, Prague consistently ranks in the top five most-visited European cities. By numbers, the capital of the Czech Republic, Czechia as it is now called, is a more popular destination than more famous cities of Berlin, Munich or Athens. The reason why is no mystery. With the dissolution of the Iron Curtain, much of Central and Eastern Europe was opened up to foreigners for the first time in decades.

This means parts of Prague are very tourist oriented. However, that doesn’t mean you won’t be able find a few fun things to do without running into everyone from your hotel or hostel. There is still plenty to see, do and eat without crowds of other tourists. [Read more…] about Prague, Escape from the Tourists

The Magnolia State! I've always thought Magnolia The Magnolia State!

I've always thought Magnolias are cool flowers, all the way back to 3rd grade when I brought one from my grandparents house to show the class. Nyctinasty (plant circadian rhythm!) - fascinsting how they respond to light, opening in the day and closing at night. Not sure the other 8-9 year olds were impressed 😆
