Updated: April, 2019 – Nick’s Famous Coney Island is the best place in Southeast Portland for a hot dog fix. And few places around are better for a late-night feeding. All kind’s of hot dogs line the menu, and Nick’s Famous Coney Island is a great place for a weird taste of Portland.
Hawthorne Boulevard is one of the most well known areas for an entertaining “taste of Portland.” Dive bars, bougie bars, food carts, yoga studios, theatres, vintage shops – an eclectic variety of restaurants – Hawthorne embodies Portland. It is also one of the best places in the world to people watch, an activity which never ceases to amaze in this weird city.
Late Night at Nick’s Famous Coney Island
After spending a day shopping and people watching in the mecca of Portland oddity, it’s getting late and you have pretty much consumed all of the IPAs in town. The time has finally come to wind down with one or two more and find something filthy and delicious to absorb the night’s sins.
There are a lot of options to choose from on Hawthorne, and many are noteworthy indeed, but Nick’s Famous Coney Island is the dive bar you should not miss.
With a feel that is a little bit diner and partly grungy sports bar, Nick’s Famous Coney Island has been a Portland mainstay since 1935. And in a city with ever-inflating prices, Nick’s remains reasonable.
Most importantly, after that aforementioned long night, you will want to stop in for some of this mouthwatering, artery-clogging happiness.
Obviously, the name suggests delicious hot dogs. There are delicious hot dogs, and they are not to be missed. Seriously, the coneys here seductive and parental guidance is strongly suggested.
A late-night fix can be found in other forms as well. The nachos are even tastier than they look, and they may well deserve a place in the Louvre, somewhere near the Mona Lisa would be appropriate. French fries smothered with cheese and beef. Burgers that will make you blush. Pair this with an unbeatable local IPA and you have the recipe for pure ecstasy.
In a city leaving a lot do be desired when searching for regular American food, there are a few bright spots. Searching for something local, something regular, requires filtering through scores of niche cuisine restaurants and endless overpriced options. Nick’s Famous Coney Island delivers comfort and familiarity without the frills.
After a day or night doing Portland things on Hawthorne Boulevard, tell your cardiologist to shove it and treat yourself. Stop in at Nick’s Famous Coney Island for some Rose City authenticity and a picture-perfect example of gluttonous, late-night American cuisine.
