The Marrakech Snake Scam

December 11, 2019 By Hangry Backpacker 9 Comments

Marrakech is a crazy place. The Moroccan city is the landing spot for millions of foreign visitors each year. Along with the notoriety of a medina (old city) that attracts shoppers, photographers and curious travelers, Marrakech is well known for its host of scams targeting tourists.

Jemaa el Fna Marrakech solo travel

The Marrakech snake scam is one of the most prominent scams in the city. Naive and green tourists are an easy target for locals looking to swindle absurd sums of money from intimidated foreigners. The sight of these snakes, which appear to be in a trance from the ceaseless, cliché Arab flute playing, distracts nearly every first-time visitor and paves the way for an easy scam in Marrakech. Marrakech Solo Travel Guide

December 9, 2019 By Hangry Backpacker Leave a Comment

Solo travel in Marrakech can feel like a daunting task. It may seem like a risky affair, but is it? Traveling solo in Marrakech isn’t inherently dangerous, but it is exhausting.

Marrakech solo travel street view koutoubia mosque

A walk through the winding streets of the Marrakech medina is a sensory overload. Peculiar, picturesque scenes around every tiny corner are distracting. The intoxicating smell of Moroccan food, in all of its underrated glory, combined with whiffs of (what I assume is) sewage or donkey excrement, adds another level of intrigue. The sound of motorbikes, construction, music and, of course, touts yelling at passing tourists adds another layer to the complex nature of Marrakech.  [Read more…] about Marrakech Solo Travel Guide

Silver Falls State Park, Oregon

October 4, 2019 By Hangry Backpacker 2 Comments

Silver Falls State Park is one of the natural highlights of Oregon. The State of Oregon is full of majestic mountains, colorful high desert, a breathtaking coastline and unforgettable sunsets. And with a rainy season (in Western Oregon) that feels endless, waterfalls are in no short supply.

Lower South Falls Silver Falls Oregon

Silver Falls showcases some of Oregon’s most spectacular displays of nature, and it’s also one of my favorite places in the state. For the ease of access and, of course, the abundance of waterfalls, Silver Falls is one of the best places for a hike in Oregon. New Orleans fascinates most first-time visitors. The food, architecture and the general laid-back lifestyle sufficiently captivate millions of tourists each year. There is, however, a lot to consider before aimlessly wandering the Big Easy.

Backpackers Travel Guide: Yangon, Myanmar

July 29, 2019 By Hangry Backpacker Leave a Comment

Backpacking is the best way to see Myanmar, and backpackers in Yangon have the freedom to wander and explore one of the most fascinating cities in Southeast Asia.

Downtown Yangon Myanmar

Yangon, formerly known as Rangoon, is the largest city and former capital of Myanmar, formerly known as Burma. After independence from the British Empire, Myanmar experienced significant political challenges. The turmoil essentially sealed off Myanmar from much of the outside world, leaving a place that is, today, unique among nations in Southeast Asia. I love a good view! This one, from the Clock Tower I love a good view! This one, from the Clock Tower of Tirana, offers great views over Skanderbeg Square.

From the top, you can see that Tirana is different than what people may assume. It's green and lively with a mountain backdrop, modern and historic at the same time.

The walk up may be difficult for some, but it's easier and shorter than it appears from street level. To my surprise, only a few other people were up there the whole time we were looking around.

Another historic city in Albania, Berat's history goes back thousands of years. Today, it is most famous for its historic center, specifically the ruined castle and the architecture of its buildings. The stone buildings that climb up the hillside have a distinctive look with tile roofs, stone/white facades and, of course, a lot of big windows. More Berat coming soon!
